Canal Nacional Area

The Canal Nacional Area is about 18 neighborhoods on either side of the Old National Canal. Today a newly renovated canal zone, both sides are strung with walkways, bike lanes, and neighborhood gardens. There are also sports areas, and connections to lots of important neighborhoods and sites.

At 12 kms, this stretch alone remains from the ancient canal linking the City's Historic Center, with Xochimilco. For centuries, canal boats supplied the City with fruits, flowers, and produce from the farms here and further afield.

Today's Canal is crossed by just six (vehicular) bridges. But between them, on either side, residents and visitors alike get a much more pleasant experience. Maintained by the Mexico City water department, the Canal Nacional Area is more pleasant and peaceful than ever, and an important part of the sustainable city.
