Mexico City FAROs

Faro de Oriente

__

Mexico City's FAROs network is a string of artist run schools and culture centers funded by the Mexico City Secretary of Culture. The Fábricas de Artes y Oficios work literally as Factories of Arts and Skills, teaching, but also offering workshops and collaborative projects. They're open to all ages.

They began in the year 2000 at a sadly abandoned building that is today the FARO de Oriente in Iztapalapa. Today, the program's success can't be overstated.

Any visit will surely welcome you, but be assured, the FAROs are "Real Mexico City," and not on any normal tourism circuit. An average visit can have you running into a group of Hip-Hop-eros, being succeeded by the local Ballet Folklorico group. Behind the doors are well-attended classes in painting, drawing, printmaking, and dance...

Those will be in addition to the local classes organized, proposed, and often presented by the people in the area. There's nothing else quite like it in the world.
