ArtSpace México is an unlikely, even spectacularly successful, artists’ collective. Together, the point is to present a platform for the exhibition of works by emerging, unexplored, and highly provocative artists. They’ve achieved that and then some.
The artists favor work that depicts the human body, and nature. They hope to offer new interpretations of beauty, masculinity, femininity, sexuality, and the inner self. And surprising as it might sound, they achieve it more often than not. Not necessarily in that order, either. Fusing contemporary and pop, and through the nuance of classical techniques, the work is often figurative, and even more often, successful. Stop in and you’ll likely agree.
Aiming to provoke reflection in viewers, ArtSpace México invites us to reinterpret our own relationship with eroticism, death, and loneliness. That’s a pretty tall order. And even if that particular detail isn’t achieved, just aiming for it seems like it’s worth giving a go.
Recent exhibitions have focused on painting, drawing, photography, video, installation, and conceptual art. Some good old low-brow and home-made kids stuff is never too far off. It’s more fun that way anyway. At home in a rollicking Condesa art neighborhood, they’ve not been a quiet neighbor. A frequent participant in Mexico City’s Gallery Weekend, they’re always one of the livelier places to stop in.
