The Museo de Arte Carillo Gil, the Carillo Gil Art Museum, opened in 1974. It’s a museum dedicated to sharing the collection of entrepreneur, Doctor Carrillo Gil’s collection of contemporary art. The museum also promotes research and artistic experimentation.

The Carillo Gill regularly hosts children’s art exhibits as part of the “Passport of Art” program for for kids from ages 6 to 12. Participants learn new techniques and to develop their own skills. The museum also offers guided tours for children so that they can see art as an entertaining activity. Within the galleries, projects from some of Mexico’s most outstanding artists have been presented and the institution is a pioneer in the promotion and dissemination of work by younger national creators.

The permanent collection consists of some 1,775 works. 1,417 of these from the original private collection of Dr. Carrillo Gil. The remaining number are newer acquisitions. The contemporary art collection contains more than 350 works and stands out for its diversity of media: video, painting, engraving, lithography, silk screen prints, collage, drawing, photography, installation work, object art, artist’s books, and sculpture.

With multiple works from 20th-century giants like José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Diego Rivera, the museum is actually best known for its active support of much younger and more experimental artists.
