The Hugo Gutiérrez Vega Art Center & Theater is a major cultural space in the north of Mexico City. With  classrooms for workshops, dance recitals, galleries, videos, and a major terrace, it’s one of the most important centers in the Vallejo section of Gustavo A. Madero.

The center is a major community draw and is most famous for its classes in suspension training, dance, and physical fitness.

Hugo Gutiérrez Vega

Hugo Gutiérrez Vega was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, in 1934. He died only in 2015. He was a poet and essayist who studied law at UNAM, English Letters in Michigan, Italian Letters at the University of Rome, and the Sociology of Communication in London.

He was a career member of the Mexican diplomatic service. He became a cultural adviser in Rome, London, Madrid, Washington and was later ambassador to Greece, Lebanon, Cyprus, Romania and Moldova, all at the same time. He did special work for UNESCO in Iran and in the Soviet Union. He was later director of the Magazine of the University of Mexico and a visiting professor in Spain, Portugal, Greece, Brazil, Argentina and Norway.

He wrote more than thirty-six books of poetry and thirteen of prose. Some were translated into ten languages. He taught at the Autonomous University of Querétaro, and served as Rector from 1966 to 1967. At UNAM, he was director of the Casa del Lago from 1974 through 1976, and elected a member of the Mexican Academy of Language in 2011.
