The FARO Aragón is a major film school and community center. It’s the City’s San Juan de Aragón neighborhood. The FARO is the sole inhabitant of the former Corregidora Cinema building. It’s a training ground for screenwriters, cinematographers, editors, lighting technicians, and filmmakers. It’s also a major meeting place for the community.

The Factories of Arts and Trades (FAROs) are a network of community and art centers runs by Mexico City’s Secretary of Culture. They’re simultaneously cultural centers and schools for arts, crafts, and skills. Many of them offer classes unavailable anywhere else.

The Faro de Aragón Cine Corregidora opened with cooperation from the Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos (CUEC). They had help from the UNAM Filmoteca, the Center for Cinema Training, the Mexican Cinematographic Institute (IMCINE), and the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences. That’s good company!

The old Corregidora Cinema was the area’s most important entertainment venue in the 1970s and 80s. It stood abandoned nearly 30 years from 1993 to 2012. With participation from across the film and television industry and support from the City and Federal Governments, it re-emerged. Today it fills a need within the FARO’s already full schedule.

Screenings are a constant. The FARO Aragón also hosts regular conferences and workshops. There’s a full slate of classes, too. It’s also an important part of the overall San Juan de Aragón community, and not far from the famous Bosque de Aragón park and zoo.
