IMSS Medicinal Herbarium (Herbario Medicinal del IMSS)

Herbario Medicinal del IMSS

The IMSS Medicinal Herbarium is the natural heir to the first record of medicinal plants in Mexico, dating back to 1552. European missionaries had begun early on to collect information and describe the healing plants used in the Americas.

Even despite these 500 years of knowledge, most of today’s medicines are manufactured by chemical synthesis. But medical knowledge of traditional therapists, healers, herbalists, and midwives is based on a knowledge of medicinal plants that still provide natural and sometimes more effective treatments.

The Herbarium is located in the basement of the convention building of the National Medical Center, in the Doctores neighborhood. Exhibits are up-to-date and complete. Dedicated to the scientific study of the indigenous plants of Mexico, it is a world-class collection. Of particular interest to scientists, botanists and pharmacists, the general public is also welcome. As many of the plants and herbs on display are still available, and even in widespread use, the Herbarium is sometimes the first stop for those interested in the field.

The largest herbarium in the Americas, the collection circulates nearly 14,000 botanical specimens. The Herbarium is also convenient to the rest of the Centro Medico complex, and a short walk from Metro Centro Medico.

Hours: Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. To 2 p.m.
