The Mercado Mixquic stands at the end of the calle 20 de noviembre in famous Mixquic. The street runs along the south of the town center, and is generally lined with vendors. That gives the indoor-outdoor market the feel of a great culmination. It’s an important center for artisan goods, foods, and ready-cooked meals.
Although it benefits from international interest in the Day of the Dead Celebrations in November each year, the market is open year round. In October, it’s likely to even be rather crowded. But as a farming community, one of the Chinampa Towns, this is no sleepy village. There’s always something going on.
The best place to sample the fare for which the region is famous may well be the town market. A 2017 UAM study counted some regular 101 dealers within the market proper. Among these are a few who are daily preparing meals and offering sit-down service. This can be a big relief for travelers and those who’ve had a bit too much street food.
The market emphasizes seasonal, locally grown food. It’s more affordable, healthier, and better for you. And visitors get a tasty invitation into the local culture. It’s extensive, important, and always interesting. The Mercado Mixquic is roughly a five-minute walk from the center of town.
