Mercado San Andrés Tetepilco

The Mercado San Andrés Tetepilco is the neighborhood market and commercial center. In the ancient original settlement of Tetepilco, it’s a must visit on any pass through the historic neighborhood. It’s just up the street from the center of town, the San Andrés Apóstol Church.

A 2017 UAM study counted some 205 vendors within the market. That number can fluctuate considerably, especially outside of the market. Like any neighborhood market, it’s often surrounded by even more vendors in the nearby streets. But among all these vendors, there are always a few preparing fresh foods, every day. That makes it an excellent stop for lunch. International visitors are especially welcome as food is less rich than what you’ll find on the street. It’s often quite a bit healthier too.

Newcomers may benefit from a primer for eating at the market. But it’s not complicated. Tiny eateries serve between 200 and 500 meals a day. But there’s no place to possibly get fresher food than here. And Mexico City residents know that they’re supporting smaller independent businesses, and even farmers, when they eat at the market. There’s really no better lunchtime option.

Folks come to the town to visit, especially, the Electric Transport Museum. But it’s just a 20 minute walk from Metro Portales to the Mercado San Andrés Tetepilco. The museum is about 12 minutes away from the market.
