The Mercado Valle Gómez really should be a tourist attraction in its own right. One of very few round public markets in the City, this one takes its “roundness” to a whole new level of carnivalesque fun and adventure. It’s the neighborhood center for densely populated Valle Gómez. But neighbors will travel from the 7 de noviembre neighborhood too. Probably the only reason it’s not famous is its proximity to the busy Circuito Interior highway.

The market is home to a couple of great eateries. Pozole fans will be especially well-received. A 2017 UAM study counted some 208 individual vendors. And while that number will fluctuate, the pozole kitchens have been a constant. And that’s just the beginning of great things to eat.

The market’s also especially wide open. With many of the aisles laid out to accommodate the circular floor, there’d be adventure around every corner. But there aren’t any corners.

There are two colonias called Valle Gómez, one in Cuauhtemoc and the other in Venustiano Carranza. The market is right on the edge of them both. The area really grew in the 20th century. And that’s reflected in the density of housing and urbanism in the area. It’s part of what makes the Mercado Valle Gómez so important to area residents. But also what makes it so much fun to visit.
