Parque Libano

Parque Libano

The Parque Líbano is a green area of some 5.5 hectares. It’s officially part of Section One of Chapultepec Park. But as it’s north of Paseo de la Reforma, even long time residents of Mexico City aren’t totally sure who looks after it.

The park is wedged between Reforma and the western section of Campos Elíseos, an important stretch of many foreign embassies. There are some private homes and other businesses in this part of Polanco, too. Among the most important of embassies, though, is that of the Lebanon. This one lends its name to the entire park. It’s more formal name is the Jardín de la República del Líbano.

The park is home to two important monuments.

  • A bust of Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta is plainly visible at the parks eastern edge, at the corner with Anatole France. Colosio   (1950–1994) was a candidate for President in 1994. He was assassinated during the 1994 campaign only four months prior to the election.
  • A far less conventional monument is dedicated to Carlos Gardel.  French-born, Argentine Charles Romuald Gardès, (1890–1935) was among the most popular singer/songwriters of his time. He’s still considered the most prominent figure in the history of tango. Remembered for his baritone voice, he died in a plane crash in Medellin, Colombia along with several other important entertainers. Today, also a monument to Argentine – Mexican friendship, the monument is visible near the intersection of Calle Monte Elbruz and Moliere.

The Parque Líbano was reseeded with grass in recent years. All the pavements and lighting were replaced at the same time. And today, it’s more than just a stretch of trees, but a popular green area and natural reserve.
