Centro Cultural San Ángel

The Centro Cultural San Ángel is one of the most important performing arts centers in this part of the City. As a neighborhood center, it’s also a hub of related activities. Opened as a cultural center in 1988, today the focus is on classical and regional dance, ballroom dancing, salsa and merengue, although there are also popular courses in journalism, photography, and writing. The center also hosts frequent exhitions of photography and art.

The center maintains a collection of art works by Mexican and foreign artists. The collectione includes paintings, sculpture, drawings, watercolor, graphics, textile, ceramics, photography, and art objects.

The building we see today was built in 1887 to be the San Ángel City Hall. It replaced an older building on the site that had been part of the el Carmen monastery just across the street. In 1952, it was remodeled to serve as the seat of the Álvaro Obregón Delegation. It remained so for 36 years.

The 1887 project was led by architect, Luis G. Anzorena. The clock was added in 1904. The 1952 remodeling was directed by the architect Enrique Aragón Echegaray. He’s best known for his 1935 Monument to Álvaro Obregón.
