Centro Cultural Tepeticpac Tlahtolcalli

Centro Cultural Tepeticpac Tlahtolcalli

The Centro Cultural Tepeticpac Tlahtolcalli is a non-profit civil society organization that developed especially from the tradition of Nahuatl Theater. In the late 20th century, this re-emerged as an important aspect of performing arts in the country. The organization focuses on culture, in particular on the rescue, vindication and processes of renewal of the diverse cultural and artistic identities of native, indigenous and popular communities.

Today the Center works with communities, peoples, neighborhoods, and individuals for social and sustainable development. They also coordinate with related organizations to participate in and influence the design, implementation, and evaluation of public policy related to culture in Mexico City.

The original theater company came about in 1989 intent on recreating the evangelization plays of the Mexican 16th-century. These had been strongly influenced by ancient pre-European theatrical presentations. The most familiar forms of the colonial-period evangelization theater includes the pastorela, the adorations, the Moors and Christians (morismas), carnivals, and the Xochipitzahuac (Dance of the Metate).

Today the Tepeticpac Tlahtolcalli offers courses in multiple indigenous languages, codex reading, alebrijes sculpture, and in many Mexica dance and musical themes. Events are regularly organized to promote native cultures and an understanding of their influence on contemporary Mexico.
