Museo de Zapata at Desierto de los Leones

Zapata Museum

The Museo de Zapata is inside the former Carmelite monastery at Desierto de los Leones, and all within the fantastic national park of the same name. It’s a remarkable setting. The museum opened for the centennial celebrations of the Mexican Revolution in 2010.

Today the museum offers a safe storage space for a collection of photographs and memorabilia focused on the life and times of Emiliano Zapata. The museum also mounts exhibitions related to the Army of the South, and a collection of rifles used during the long revolutionary period.

Zapata in particular continues to draw a considerable interest, in part because he was killed before seeing most of his revolutionary goals met. Especially across the southern and rural parts of Mexico City, and indeed, in many parts of the country, he continues to inspire.

The museum is just part of the dramatic and inviting former monastery which can also be toured. Many guests will come simply for the park. A vast wilderness area, guests can go in for just about any variety of outdoor activities. Hiking and mountain biking are especially popular.

The Museo de Zapata is in the relatively populated monastery area, where food and refreshments and some baseline necessities are also for sale.
